Network Options for Medicare Advantage Plans

Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)

HMO’s are the most popular Advantage plan option, because it allows for keeping costs low for insurance companies so they can in turn add extra benefits that Medicare doesn’t cover. Being in an HMO requires referrals from your primary care provider to see other specialists or providers in network.

Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)

PPO’s usually have less benefits and can be more expensive or have higher max out of pocket (MOOP) costs because of the plan’s ability to see providers both in network or out of network. Seniors staying in network will find themselves paying less out of pocket compared to seeing providers out of network.

Keep In Mind When Comparing Advantage Plans

Change Anytime of the Year

5-star plans allow seniors to get better benefits by changing Advantage plans outside of the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15th – Dec 7th) or Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (Jan 1st – March 31st).

Medications Can Break You

 Perhaps more important than having certain benefits, the biggest factor in keeping healthcare costs low is choosing a plan that not only takes all your prescription drugs, but at the lowest price compared to other plans.

Confirm Doctor's Location

 Be aware of plans that will show your doctor being “in-network” when in fact they’re out of network when it comes to their usual office location you usually see them at, but in-network at another office location you weren’t aware of.
