Three Types of Critical Illness Insurance Coverage

Cancer Insurance

By far the most popular critical illness insurance is cancer insurance. Cancer insurance covers the expensive drugs, travel expenses, diet modifications, experimental treatment and more.

Cancer insurance is even more important for seniors on a Medicare Supplement because they are more exposed to elevated drug costs because of treatment.

Heart Attack Insurance

The second most popular critical illness insurance is heart attack insurance. Heart attack insurance covers time off of work, expensive drugs, and plan costs.

Heart attack insurance is more important to seniors who are on a Medicare Advantage plan, who are exposed to their max out-of-pocket costs (MOOP).

Stroke Insurance

The third most popular critical illness insurance is stroke insurance. Stroke insurance covers home modifications, home health care, expensive drugs and Medicare plan costs.

Stroke insurance also is more important for a senior on a Medicare Advantage plan for the same reasons mentioned in heart attack insurance.

Four Tips To Keep In Mind
When Getting a Critical Illness Plan

Underwriting Matters

Not all critical illness companies underwrite their policies the same. Some companies may only look back for cancer for 5 years, some don’t want to see any previous diagnosis. That’s why it’s important to use an independent insurance broker to help you compare all your options from various insurance companies, to get the lowest price for the amount of coverage you want.

Return of Premium (ROP)

One of the greatest benefit riders (an additional benefit upgrade for a price) you can add to your policy is the Return of Premium option, which gives you all your premiums back minus any claims that were paid out. This option is great for those that want coverage to supplement the shortcomings of their Medicare plan but hate the idea of throwing away money on insurance they won’t use.

Benefit Replenishment

Another rider that is available on certain critical illness insurance plans is the Replenishment of Benefits rider. This rider recover the benefits paid out after the last treatment for a claim, which can take several to sometimes over five years depending on the company. This is a great rider in case your cancer ever comes back from remission, or you have another heart attack.

Indemnity vs Reimbursement

Depending on the plan, it will be an indemnity plan which gives you a lump sum benefit once you receive your diagnosis, or it will be a reimbursable plan that you have to file claims with bills to get reimbursed by the insurance company. The ONLY plan we recommend getting is an indemnity plan – the last thing to worry about if you have a critical illness is filing all the different claims.
